WHITEFIRE WOMEN

Diane Winley

The Reverend Diane Winley
Presbyterian pastor

"My being a woman led me to care about the poor and sick and has generated in me this nurturing. Maybe my calling to have love in my heart for people different from me is also part of my being a woman. I?ve always been a mediator, someone who could work with people across age, race and class. Women learn to do this to survive."

A successful health care activist for the poor in New York City for many years, Reverend Winley became a Presbyterian minister at 62, with healing via prayer and meditation as her special interest. Despite her effort and her excellence, she serves in a 100 year-old Korean Methodist church on Manhattan's Upper West Side that is peeling and crumbling within and without. Her parishioners, mostly Korean, are few and elderly.
